During the Hundred Years’ War, the English army captured the French city of Calais.

백년전쟁 동안 영국군은 프랑스의 도시 칼레를 점령했다.

The king of England promised not to harm its people if six leaders, or *burghers, surrendered to be killed.

영국 왕은 만일 6명의 지도자, 즉 귀족들이 항복하고 목숨을 바친다면 그 도시의 시민들을 해치지 않겠다고 약속했다.

Six leaders agreed to give up their lives right away.

6명의 지도자는 당장 자신들의 목숨을 포기하기로 동의했다.

Through this action, the city was saved, and the king decided not to kill the brave men.

이 행동을 통해 그 도시는 구조되었고, 왕은 그 용감한 사람들을 죽이지 않기로 결정했다.

More than 500 years later, in 1880, the government of Calais wanted to honor the burghers by building a statue.

They hired Auguste Rodin, the most famous sculptor of the time, for the project.

He worked on the statue for the next ten years.

When he finally finished, however, the city leaders were not very pleased.

The Burghers of Calais was not like any other statue.

Instead of looking proud and heroic, the six men in the statue seemed tired and worried.

It was because Rodin wanted to show their true emotions.

He thought they probably had felt proud, but had been afraid of their coming death at the same time.

Also, the statue was not on top of a high base as most heroic statues were.

It was at the same height as the people who looked at it.

Although there was much debate over Rodin’s work, it remained in Calais.

Today, it is considered a masterpiece and an important example of changing styles in sculpture.
