There is a famous story concerning the great author Victor Hugo.

위대한 작가 빅토르 위고에 관한 유명한 일화가 있다.

In 1862, after completing Les Misérables, Hugo sent the manuscript to his publishers.

1862년에 『레미제라블』을 완성한 후, 위고는 그의 출판사에 원고를 보냈다.

It was accompanied by a note that simply read, “?”.

그것은 단순히 ‘?’라고만 쓰여 있는 쪽지와 함께였다.

The publishers understood that Hugo was asking what they thought of his latest work.

After reading it, they sent a note in reply.

It’s a funny story, but did you ever wonder about the origin of those two common punctuation marks?

No one is exactly sure where they came from, but it is believed that the question mark was created by early scholars.

When writing in Latin, they would write questio at the end of sentences to indicate that they were questions.

This was eventually shortened to qo to save space.

The lowercase q was written atop the o and over time the two letters evolved into the question mark.

As for the exclamation mark, it is thought to have been created through a similar process.

The Latin word io means “an exclamation of joy.”

The word was written with one letter above the other at the end of sentences, and it was slowly transformed into the punctuation mark we know today.
