If you have ever seen a full moon that seemed brighter and larger than normal, you probably saw a supermoon.

평소보다 더 밝고 크게 보이는 보름달을 본 적이 있다면, 당신은 아마도 슈퍼문을 봤을 것이다.

But what causes a supermoon?

그런데 왜 슈퍼문이 발생할까?

The moon goes through phases.

달은 여러 모습을 거친다.

As a result, we can sometimes see the whole moon and other times see only part of it.

그 결과, 우리는 때로는 달 전체를 보고 다른 때에는 달의 일부만을 볼 수 있다.

These phases occur because the moon orbits the earth.

이 모습들은 달이 지구를 공전하기 때문에 일어난다.

We see a full moon when the sun and the moon are on opposite sides of the earth.

태양과 달이 지구 반대편에 있을 때 우리는 보름달을 볼 수 있다.

However, the moon doesn't move around the earth in a perfect circle ― the shape is more like an oval.

그러나 달은 완벽한 원으로 지구 주변을 돌지 않는다. 그 모양은 타원형에 더 가깝다.

This means that the moon's distance from the earth is constantly changing.

이것은 달의 지구로부터의 거리가 끊임없이 바뀌고 있음을 의미한다.

If a full moon happens when the moon is as close to the earth as possible, it is called a supermoon.

달이 가능한 한 지구에 가까울 때 보름달이 뜨면, 그것은 슈퍼문이라 불린다.

A supermoon can appear to be 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than a normal full moon.

슈퍼문은 보통의 보름달보다 14% 더 크고 30% 더 밝아 보일 수 있다.

Only about one out of every 14 full moons is a supermoon.

14개의 보름달 중에서 대략 한 개만이 슈퍼문이다.

So, if you have a chance to see one, don't miss it!
