Before the year 1500, the Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas had three great civilizations in Mexico and South America.

서기 1500년 이전에 마야인, 아즈텍인, 그리고 잉카인은 멕시코와 남아메리카에 위대한 3대 문명을 가지고 있었다.

All three were defeated by Spanish armies, but some historians say that with the armies came an even more horrifying weapon: smallpox.

이 세 문명 모두 스페인의 군대에 패배하였는데, 일부 역사학자들은 그 군대와 함께 더욱 더 끔찍한 무기가 들어왔다고 말한다. 바로 천연두이다.

In the early 1500s, the Spanish attacked the Aztecs and Mayas.

1500년대 초반에, 스페인 사람들이 아즈텍과 마야를 공격했다.

At first, the Spanish army couldn't defeat the Mayas and Aztecs, who were much more powerful and familiar with the area.

처음에는 스페인 군대가 마야와 아즈텍의 군대를 이길 수가 없었는데, 그들이 훨씬 더 강력했고 그 지역에 익숙했기 때문이다.

However, one of the slaves in the Spanish army was infected with smallpox, and it quickly spread throughout the whole region.

그러나 스페인 군대의 노예 중 한 명이 천연두에 감염되어 있었고, 그것은 전 지역에 급속하게 퍼졌다.

The Spanish soldiers were immune to the disease, but the Maya and Aztec soldiers had never encountered smallpox before.

It weakened their armies and allowed the Spanish to defeat them.

Smallpox quickly spread south, reaching the Incas of South America in 1525.

Like the Aztecs and Mayas, the Incas were unprepared for the disease.

It killed their king and his successor.

Without a leader, the Inca Empire was easily defeated by the invading Spanish soldiers, and it fell into ruin.
