드라이

The kitchen tap makes strange sounds.

주방 수도꼭지가 이상한 소리를 낸다.

It coughs. It spits once, and then goes silent.

기침을 한다. 침을 한 번 뱉더니 조용해진다.

“Mom,” I shout out into the living room, “water is not coming out.”

“엄마,” 나는 거실을 향해 소리친다. “물이 안 나와요.”

“Alyssa, shush!” Mom says.

“Alyssa, 조용히 해!” 엄마가 말한다.

She is watching the TV, where a news anchor is talking about the “flow crisis.”

엄마는 TV를 보고 있고, TV에서는 뉴스 앵커가 ‘물 공급 위기’에 대해 이야기하고 있다.

This is what the media has been calling the drought ever since people got tired of hearing the word “drought.”

사람들이 ‘가뭄’이라는 단어를 듣는 데 지친 이후로 언론은 가뭄을 이렇게 부르고 있다.

Now the crisis is entering a new stage.

이제 위기는 새로운 단계로 접어들고 있다.

We have no running water out of the tap.

수도꼭지에서 수돗물이 나오지 않는다.

“To the mall!” says Uncle Basil.

“쇼핑몰로 가자!” Basil 삼촌이 말한다.

My little brother Garrett and I jump in Uncle’s truck.

동생 Garrett과 나는 삼촌의 트럭에 올라탄다.

As we pull into the parking lot, we can see the crowd.

주차장에 차를 세우자 많은 사람이 눈에 들어온다.

“You two go in. I’ll meet you inside,” Uncle Basil says.

“너희 둘은 들어가. 안에서 만나자.”라고 Basil 삼촌이 말한다.

Inside it’s like Black Friday at its worst ― but today it’s not televisions and video games people are after.

내부 풍경은 최악의 블랙 프라이데이와 비슷하지만, 오늘 사람들이 찾는 것은 텔레비전이나 비디오 게임이 아니다.

What I see in the carts in the checkout line are mostly water bottles.

계산대에 줄을 선 카트에 보이는 것은 대부분 물병이다.

The essentials of life.

생명의 필수품.

There is a look of impatience on the faces of the people in line.

줄을 선 사람들의 얼굴에는 조급한 표정이 역력하다.

There is even hostility, hidden by a thin layer of politeness.

심지어는 공손함 뒤에 숨은 적대감까지 느껴진다.

Even that politeness is stretched thin.

그 공손함조차 얇아져 있다.

As I approach the back of the store for water bottles, I realize I am too late.

물병을 사러 매장 뒤편에 다다랐을 때 나는 너무 늦었다는 것을 깨닫는다.

The shelves are already empty.

진열대는 이미 비어있다.

I manage my way to the side aisle, trying my luck.

옆 통로로 가서 운을 시험해 본다.

Sometimes people place unwanted items in the wrong shelves.

가끔 사람들이 원하지 않는 물건을 엉뚱한 선반에 놓는 경우가 있다.

Lucky! I find a single case of water that someone abandoned there maybe yesterday, when it wasn’t such a precious commodity.

운이 좋다! 물이 그렇게 귀한 물건이 아니었던 어제 누군가 그곳에 버린 생수 한 상자를 발견한다.

I reach for it, only to find it pulled away at the last second by a woman.

손을 뻗어 생수 상자를 집어 들려는 순간, 한 여자가 상자를 가져가는 것을 본다.

She stacks it on top of her cart like a crown on top of her canned goods.

그녀는 생수 상자를 카트에 담긴 통조림 위에 마치 왕관처럼 쌓아 놓는다.

“I’m sorry, but we were here first,” she says.

“미안하지만 우리가 먼저 왔어요.” 그녀가 말한다.

And then her daughter steps forward ― a girl I recognize from soccer ― Hali Hartling.

그러자 그녀의 딸이 앞으로 나오는데, 축구팀에서 알고 있는 Hali Hartling이다.

As her mother pulls their cart away, Hali leans closer to me.

엄마가 카트를 끌고 가자 Hali가 내게 몸을 기울인다.

“I’m sorry about that, Alyssa.”

“미안해, Alyssa.”

“Didn’t I share my water with you at the practice last week?” I point out to her.

“지난주 연습할 때 내가 물 나눠주지 않았니?” 나는 그녀에게 지적한다.

“Maybe you could return the favor and share a few bottles with me.”

“너도 호의를 베풀어서 나랑 물 몇 병 나눠도 되겠네.”

She looks back to her mother, who’s already moving down the aisle, then turns back to me shaking her head.

그녀는 이미 통로를 따라 이동하고 있는 어머니를 돌아보더니 고개를 절레절레 흔들며 내게로 돌아선다.

And then she gets a little bit red in the face, and turns to leave before it becomes a deep flush.

그러고는 얼굴이 약간 붉어지더니 더 붉어지기 전에 자리를 뜨려고 돌아선다.

I look for Garrett, whom I find in the frozen aisle.

나는 냉동식품 통로에서 Garrett을 발견한다.

Then I see something.

그러다 뭔가를 발견한다.

Just past the frozen vegetables and ice cream, there is a case packed with ice.

냉동 야채와 아이스크림 바로 옆에 얼음이 가득 담긴 상자가 있다.

I open the door and reach for a bag.

나는 문을 열고 얼음 봉지를 잡는다.

“What are you doing? We need water, not ice,” he reminds me.

“뭐 하는 거야? 우린 얼음이 아니라 물이 필요해.” 동생이 내게 상기시켜 준다.

“Ice is water. Just help me,” I tell him.

“얼음은 물이야. 돕기나 해.” 내가 말한다.

Garrett and I put one bag of ice after another into our cart, until it is piled as high as it can get.

Garrett과 나는 최대한 높이 쌓일 때까지 얼음 봉지를 카트에 담는다.

By now other people have taken notice and begin to empty the ice case.

이제 다른 사람들도 눈치를 채고 얼음 상자를 비우기 시작한다.
