What comes to mind when you think of Christmas?

Some think of Santa Claus.

Others think of gifts under a Christmas tree.

But many French people may say bûche de Noël.

On Christmas, they bake bûche de Noël, a Christmas cake.

In English, the name means “Christmas log.”

The cake is covered with chocolate whipped cream and rolled into a round shape.

It looks like a log!

Its story starts in ancient Celtic tradition.

The Celtic people burned tree trunks on the winter solstice to celebrate the end of winter.

Many years later, a French baker remembered this tradition.

No one is sure, but here is one story from Ethiopia.

One day, a shepherd’s goats ate some red berries from a strange bush.

Later, they began to run around and jump up and down.

This was because the seeds of the berries were coffee beans, and the caffeine inside them made the goats excited.

When the shepherd told some monks the story, they thought that the berries came from the devil.
