The word “OK” is one of the most commonly used words in the world.

Even though it’s a fairly new word, its origin remained a mystery for many years.

Some believed it came from the Greek word “ola kala”, which means “all good.”

However, its true origin was finally revealed in the 1960s by a language scholar named Allen Read.

Read discovered that the word “OK” actually came from Charles Gordon Greene, the editor of The Boston Morning Post.

In 1839, Greene created the word “OK” to make fun of people with bad spelling.

He joked that “OK” meant “oll korrect,” which is an incorrect spelling of “all correct.”

Normally, weak jokes like this are quickly forgotten.

However, the word “OK” got lucky.

In 1840, Martin Van Buren was running for reelection as the president of the United States.

Because he grew up in a town called Kinderhook, he was given the nickname “Old Kinderhook.”

During his campaign, supporters shortened the nickname to “OK” and chanted “Vote for OK” at rallies.

They even started “O.K. Clubs” to support him.
