Humans have launched thousands of satellites and rockets into space.

In the process, we have also been creating tons of junk in space.

Space junk is called space *debris.

Some is enormous, while other debris is as tiny as a potato chip.

About 23 thousand pieces of debris orbit around the Earth.

Due to their speed, even a tiny piece of space junk can create huge problems.

When a satellite crashes into a small piece of debris, it can break apart into thousands of new pieces.

The resulting space debris can damage other satellites and spacecrafts.

In response to this problem, the United Nations has been askingcompanies to remove their satellites from orbit.

If satellites complete their mission, they should be taken out of space within 25 years.

To make this happen, several solutions have been suggested.

For example, dead satellites could be pulled out of their orbit with magnets or a huge net.

Once they are pulled back into the Earth’s atmosphere, they would burn up.

Unfortunately, this method will only work for bigger satellites.

More research is needed to find a solution in the long term.
