Around the world, most people use the solar calendar to track each year.

This calendar is based on the movements of the Earth around the Sun.

However, there is another calendar that follows the movements of the moon.

It is called the lunar calendar.

그것은 음력이라고 불린다.

The time it takes the Earth to move around the Sun is known as a solar year.

지구가 태양 주위를 도는 데 걸리는 시간은 태양년으로 알려져 있다.

A solar month is one-twelfth of every solar year.

태양월은 매 태양년의 12분의 1이다.

Similarly, a lunar year also has twelve months.

비슷하게 태음년에도 12개월이 있다.

However, each lunar month is defined as the time the moon takes to complete one cycle of its phases.

그러나, 각 태음월은 달의 상(相)이 한 주기를 완료하는 데 걸리는 시간으로 정의된다.

These phases include a new moon, a half moon, and a full moon.

이러한 상은 초승달, 반달, 보름달을 포함한다.

The whole process typically takes about 29.5 days, although the period is not exactly the same every month.

비록 그 기간이 매달 정확히 같지는 않지만, 전 과정은 대개 약 29.5일이 소요된다.

A lunar year has twelve of these cycles.

태음년은 이러한 주기가 12번 있다.

While a solar year lasts around 365 days, a lunar year is slightly shorter at 354 days.

태양년이 약 365일 지속되는 반면, 태음년은 354일로 약간 더 짧다.

The term “epact” was used to describe this 11-day difference.

‘epact’라는 용어는 이 11일간의 차이를 설명하기 위해 사용되었다.

In order to balance the two calendars, an extra month is added to the lunar calendar every three years.

두 달력의 균형을 맞추기 위해, 3년마다 음력에 여분의 한 달이 추가된다.

On the solar calendar, there is a “leap day” added to the month of February every four years.

양력에는 4년마다 2월에 추가된 ‘윤일(閏日)’이 있다.

This day falls on the 29th of February every “leap year.”

이날은 매 ‘윤년(閏年)’의 2월 29일에 해당한다.
