Recently, gig economies have developed in many countries.

최근 많은 나라에서 gig 경제가 발달했다.

But what is a gig economy?

그런데 gig 경제가 무엇일까?

The word “gig” comes from the music industry and refers to short-term work.

‘gig’이라는 단어는 음악 산업에서 왔으며 단기 일자리를 가리킨다.

So in a gig economy, companies rely on temporary or part-time workers.

그래서 gig 경제에서는 기업들이 임시직 또는 시간제 근로자에게 의존한다.

These employees get paid for the amount of work they do.

이 직원들은 그들이 하는 일의 양에 대한 보수를 받는다.

Private tutors, babysitters, and drivers for ride services are examples of gig workers.

개인 교사, 베이비시터, 승차 서비스 운전사가 gig 근로자의 예이다.

Gig economies have many advantages.

gig 경제는 많은 이점을 가지고 있다.

For instance, companies can choose workers from a large number of people with a gig app.

예를 들어, 기업들은 gig 앱으로 수많은 사람들 중에서 근로자를 고를 수 있다.

This allows them to find skilled workers quickly.

이는 그들이 숙련된 근로자를 빨리 찾을 수 있게 해준다.

Workers find gig jobs convenient because they can make their own schedule.

근로자들은 스스로 일정을 짤 수 있기 때문에 gig 일자리가 편리하다고 생각한다.

Plus, they can work as much as they want to.

게다가, 그들은 원하는 만큼 일할 수 있다.

Despite these advantages, gig economies also have negative aspects.

이런 장점들에도 불구하고, gig 경제는 부정적인 측면도 있다.

In gig economies, it’s difficult for workers to develop long-term careers.

gig 경제에서는 근로자들이 장기적인 경력을 쌓기 어렵다.

Furthermore, they don’t get company benefits.

게다가, 그들은 회사의 (복지) 혜택을 받지 않는다.

For example, they don’t get sick leave.

예를 들어, 그들은 병가를 내지 않는다.

Nevertheless, research has shown that the number of gig jobs increased significantly during the pandemic.

그럼에도 불구하고, 연구는 세계적인 전염병 기간 동안 gig 일자리의 수가 크게 증가했다는 것을 보여준다.

In fact, there are over five million ride service drivers in the world, so there must be a demand for them.

It’s clear that gig economies can’t be just a passing trend.
